Women's Tennis Falls Just Short Against UPenn, 4-3
Mar 4, 2019 | Women's Tennis
The Green Wave (5-9) fell behind early in a tight doubles point when the Quakers (7-2) scored a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position. Alex Alegre and Adelaide Lavery held a 5-4 lead at No. 3, and despite a 5-5 tie at No. 1, the Wave's 25th-ranked duo of Elena Muller and Ivone Alvaro were unable to hang on, as UPenn claimed won the next two games to clinch the first team point of the day.
The defeat for Muller and Alvaro was their first this spring, as they now own a 12-1 overall record and a 10-1 mark in dual matches this season.
Singles play proved to be a battle all the way to the end, as Tulane seized the momentum on multiple occasions. Alex Alegre tied up the match, 1-1, with a convincing, 6-0, 6-1, win at No. 6 singles, but UPenn earned straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 5 to push the Green Wave to the brink.
Ivone Alvaro drew Tulane within one with a victory at No. 3 over Marija Curnic, 6-2, 6-4, to cut the deficit to just one with two matches remaining.
Daniela La Fuente battled her way through a tough match on court two, but prevailed with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 victory to tie things up, 3-3. Unfortunately, the Quakers bounced back from a lost second set on court four to close out the third frame, 6-2, and hold on for the 4-3 win.
Tulane will remain in Florida for the rest of the week, before heading to Orlando to take on American Athletic Conference foe UCF on Friday, March 8. First serve is set for 10 a.m. (CT).
