Men's Tennis Drops Road Match at USF, 4-3
Mar 8, 2019 | Men's Tennis
TAMPA, Fla. – In a rematch of last year's American Athletic Conference Championship final, the Tulane men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback at USF on Friday afternoon.
The Green Wave (4-10) fell behind early when the Bulls (7-4) took two of three doubles matches, beginning with a 6-2 win on court two. Luis Erlenbusch and Dane Esses pulled out a 6-4 victory on court three to knot things up, but USF held on for a 7-6(3) win on court one to clinch the first team point of the day.
Tulane fought back in a big way in singles when Tyler Schick cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jakub Wojcik from the No. 4 spot in the lineup. Erlenbusch, ranked 72nd nationally, put the Wave in front, 2-1, when he closed out Pierre Luquet, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 position.
Hamish Stewart kept the rally going when he bounced back from a lost first set to defeat Chase Ferguson, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, on court two, pushing USF to the brink with a 3-1 advantage.
The Bulls were far from done however, as they hung on for a tough, straight-set victory on court six, before battling out a pair of three-set triumphs at No. 5 and No. 1 to complete the comeback.
Tulane returns home for two matches next weekend, beginning with a battle against Old Dominion on Friday, March 15, followed by a Sunday, March 17 contest against Pepperdine. Both matches are slated for 1 p.m., start times at the City Park Tennis Center.
