NEW ORLEANS – Time to compete with the best of the east.
Eight Green Wave student-athletes will be heading to the Sunshine State this week for the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida, where they will take on the top competitors in the region.
At stake? A trip to Austin, Texas, in early June for the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Maya Harewood will kick things off for Tulane in the 400 on Thursday. She will be followed on Friday by Kyah Loyd in the 100 hurdles, Mckenzie Melius and Emmanuel Rotich in the 3K steeplechase and Rebekah Markel, Alex Potts and Nastja Modic in the pole vault. Harewood would also race in a 400-meter dash quarterfinal Friday if she qualifies Thursday. On Saturday, Trina Malej will compete in the triple jump, and Loyd has a chance to race in the 100 hurdles quarterfinal if she qualifies on Friday.
Live results will be available online, as will live video. To watch live video, fans need to subscribe to Flo Track's service at a cost.
For Harewood and Loyd, a top-24 finish in their first day of racing will put them into the quarterfinals. Then they would need to place in the top 12 to earn a berth to the national championship meet.
For everyone else without quarterfinal rounds in Jacksonville, they must finish in the top 12 in their single day of competition to reach the national meet in Austin. The national championship meet will be held June 5-8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas.
Rotich comes into the meet as a heavy favorite to qualify for the national championship in the steeplechase as he has done each of the last two seasons. A senior now, Rotich had the second-best time in the east this year (8:41.05) and is coming off conference crown in the steeplechase and the 5K.
Rebekah Markel also stands a great chance of reaching the national meet this year as she heads to Jacksonville with the No. 7 pole vault clearance of the season (4.31 meters) to win the American Athletic Conference championship. This will be her third year at the regional meet. Alex Potts (No. 29, 4.05m) and Nastja Modic (No. 31, 4.03) also had tremendous freshman seasons to earn their way into the regional meet.
Malej had her best jump of the season on her final attempt of the year, reaching 12.67 meters to earn the No. 36 place in the region. That mark, set at the league championship in Wichita, Kansas, on May 12, was her personal best.
Harewood enters this weekend's meet with the No. 40 time in the east region in the 400-meter dash. She set that time in her final race of the season, running a 53.67-second race at the conference championship. Harewood will be racing at the east regional for the second straight year.
Loyd had the No. 42 mark in the region in the 100 hurdles this year, setting a time of 13.55 seconds at the LSU Alumni Gold meet. Loyd, just a sophomore, is already a veteran of the regional meet and will be making her second appearance.
Melius saved her best for last as well, racing a 10:27.88 steeplechase at the conference meet to break her own school record and earn the No. 43 spot in the region. This will the first time in her four-year career to run at a regional meet.
