JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tulane sprinter Maya Harewood completed her junior season on Thursday with a run of 54.72 seconds in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA East Regional.
Harewood placed sixth in her heat and 39th overall, coming up short of the cutoff mark to advance to Friday's national quarterfinals. The top 24 runners on Thursday advanced to Friday's races.
Despite missing the cutoff, Harewood placed above her seed entering the race. Harewood was seeded 40th in the 48-athlete regional competition but beat out her seed by one.
Harewood's junior season was still an impressive one, as she set a new personal record with a time of 53.67 seconds in the 400 at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in early May. Harewood's time earned her a trip to the podium as she collected a bronze medal at that meet.
Next up for the Green Wave will be Friday's action at the NCAA East Regional. Emmanuel Rotich and Mckenzie Melius will run in the 3K steeplechase, Rebekah Markel, Alex Potts and Nastja Modic will compete in the pole vault and Kyah Loyd will race in the 100 hurdles.
