NEWPORT, Rhode Island – The Tulane sailing team wrapped up day one of sailing in the Gill Coed Western Semifinal on Tuesday, recording three top ten performances on the water.
"We had some ups and downs today, and while we feel good about parts of our performance, we still have a ways to go before we can contend with the more experienced teams," head coach Charles Higgins said. "It was another windy day, which was physically and mentally taxing. The team continued to battle, and hopefully tomorrow we can love to move up the leaderboard. Tomorrow's forecast should be a bit more toward our strengths, and I know the team is eager to get back after it."
Skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan, alongside crews Amelia Schofield and Sophie Ricker, earned a best eighth-place finish in the first A Division race of the day. The three stand in 14th after eight races, also recording a second top ten finish while coming in 10th in the sixth race of the day.
The B Division team had an almost identical finish, also standing in 14th while totaling 106 points compared to the A Division's 105. Skipper Caelan Watts teamed up with crews Sophie Ricker and Kate Lenhard in eight races, earning a best ninth-place finish in race three.
Tulane currently stands at 14th among 18 total teams in the regatta, recording 211 points. Hobart & William tops the standings with 56 points, followed by Charleston with 74 and Yale with 79.
The Green Wave head back out on the water on Wednesday, looking to break into the top nine teams to earn a spot in the finals on Thursday and Friday.
