Gill Coed Western Semifinal Results
NEWPORT, Rhode Island – The Tulane sailing team completed day two of the Gill Coed Eastern Semifinal on Wednesday, wrapping up the Green Wave's first varsity season on the water.
"As expected, our national championship appearance was tough to the end. We gave it our all but ultimately, our determination was not enough to overcome our lack of experience at this level," head coach Charles Higgins said. "With such a young team, we will certainly be able to use this experience next season and beyond."
Tulane finished in 15th of 18 teams in the national regatta, beating CSU Long Beach, Washington and Minnesota. The Green Wave totaled 390 points after 28 total races, with the A Division recording 184 and the B Division earning 206.
Skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan sailed alongside crew Grace Bloomfield for a majority of the races on Wednesday, after partnering with senior Sophie Ricker for the first two. The group ended the semifinal competition in 15th place among the A Division boats, earning a best 10th place finish on day two while also recording two top ten finishes on day one.
The B Division finished in the No. 16 spot, with skippers Caelan Watts and Grace Siwicki teaming up with crew Kate Lenhard to finish out the regatta. Their highlight of the week was a ninth-place finish in the third race on Tuesday, while earning a best 15th place race on Wednesday.
"I'm especially proud of our seniors, who gave everything they had for the team this year," Higgins said. "It wasn't an easy transition onto a varsity team, but they did so enthusiastically and I know they will look back on this experience with pride for the rest of their lives."
Hobart & William won the regatta, totaling 102 points after 14 races in each division, followed by Yale with 145 and Boston College with 150. These teams, as well as Charleston, Georgetown, Connecticut College, Coast Guard, Old Dominion and UC Santa Barbara, qualified for the finals and will compete for the title along with the Eastern Division on Thursday and Friday.
