Rosenberg Claims the 90th Annual New York State Amateur Championship
Jul 11, 2019 | Women's Golf
LANCASTER, N.Y. – Tulane University junior Jennifer Rosenberg added to her list of amateur golf accomplishments on Thursday, as she captured the 2019 New York State Women's Amateur Championship in a thrilling two-hole playoff at Lancaster Country Club.
Â
Rosenberg, who earned All-American Athletic Conference honors as a sophomore, posted an impressive three round total of 217 (70-75-72).
Â
"It means so much to have won this title at such a prestigious tournament," Rosenberg said. "I was really proud of the way I handled myself and bounced back on the playoff holes. Overall it was a great event and I can't wait to go back next year to defend my title."
Â
Rosenberg defeated Chelsea Dantonio, who just finished a successful senior campaign at Winthrop University where she posted three top 20 finishes during the 2018-19 season.
Â
Dantonio, who was runner-up at last year's championship, was seven strokes back from Rosenberg entering the final round. On holes nine through 12, she posted four straight birdies, which brought her into a tie with Rosenberg, who led the tournament, heading into the final round. Rosenberg birdied the 13th hole to regain the lead by a stroke, until the par-5 16th, where Dantonio knocked down a 35-foot birdie to even things again at two-under-par. The duo made pars on their final two holes, leaving a playoff to decide the 2019 champion.
Â
On the first playoff hole, No. 18, Dantonio left herself with a four-foot putt for birdie while Rosenberg missed the green left by a few feet. She almost chipped-in from a difficult downhill lie, as her ball rolled just past the left edge of the cup. Dantonio was unable to convert her birdie, and the two remained on the 18th for the second hole of the playoff.Â
Â
The pair then hit almost identical drives down the middle of the fairway. Rosenberg went first and landed her shot 10 feet from the flagstick. Dantonio's ball rolled through the green leaving her a with a chip. Dantonio was then unable to get up-and-down, and Rosenberg made her par to secure the victory.
Â
Rosenberg enters her junior year following an impressive sophomore season where she posted three top 10 finishes, which included a fifth-place performance at the American Athletic Conference Championship.
