GALVESTON, Texas – Tulane sailing's sophomore Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and freshman Cameron Giblin recorded first-place finishes in the women's and men's SEISA Singlehanded Qualifier regattas this weekend, each earning spots in the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships.
"Our opening weekend could not have been more successful," head coach Charles Higgins said. "To have three freshmen and one sophomore be so dominant was great to see, and certainly shows we have potential for big things in front of us."
Rodriguez-Horan claimed the SEISA conference title for the second consecutive year, notching seven wins in 10 races to total 16 points and solidify the victory. Giblin totaled six wins in 10 races in his first collegiate competition, finishing with 19 points.
The two will sail among the nation's top contenders in their respective races from Nov. 8-10 at UC Santa Barbara.
Tulane's freshman Cam Farrah finished in second place in the women's singlehanded qualifier, earning 21 points and one winning race on the water.
"At the Women's Singlehanded Championship, Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan] and Cam [Farrah] both sailed well to take first and second, winning 8 of the 10 races between them," Higgins said. "Ciara was able to get a slim lead late in the day after some early mistakes and hold on to win the event for the second year in a row."
Freshman Asher Zittrer competed against Giblin on the men's side, adding three first-place finishes to total 28 points in his first time in action for the Green Wave.
"The men's side was extremely tough. The top four boats were never more than a few feet away for each race," Higgins added. "Collectively, Asher [Zittrer] and Cameron [Giblin] won nine of the 10 races, but Cameron's string of six straight wins almost guaranteed the victory with two races remaining."
As a team, Tulane also qualified for the ICSA Match Race Championship after winning the SEISA Match Race Elimination Regatta in New Orleans on Sunday.
The Green Wave are back in action at home next weekend, hosting the Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta on Saturday and Sunday out of the Municipal Yacht Harbor on Lake Pontchartrain.
