
Cross Country Takes Second in LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE – The Tulane men's and women's cross country teams both finished second in the LSU Invitational Friday night, defeating Southeastern Louisiana, Southern and Nicholls State while falling only to host LSU.
The men and women each totaled 60 points in their respective races, with the men averaging a time of 15:47 and the women averaging 19:27.
Sophomore Evans Kipchumba led the way for the Green Wave's men's squad in the 5K, taking fifth-place with a time of 15:08.41. Graduate student Tom Coe was next up for the Olive and Blue, crossing the finish line in eighth at 15:18.63.
Redshirt senior McKenzie Melius finished in fourth place among 40 female runners, earning a time of 18:27.55 in the 5K, and was followed right behind by senior Mary Catherine Stovall in fifth place at 18:46.44.
Stovall's time is her new personal best, finishing faster than her record of 19:23.43 set in last weekend's Nicholls Cross Country Invitational.
Rounding out the runners for the men's team were senior Carlos Zervigon, freshman Samuel Kellum, sophomore Ian Valdez and sophomore Jamie Polakoff.
Zervigon finished in 12th-place with a time of 15:40.88, followed by Kellum in 16th just before the 16-minute mark at 15:59.38. Zervigon's time is a new personal best, beating his prior high of 16:24.90 that he set in 2017.
Valdez ended up in 35th with a time of 16:51.51, followed by Polakoff in 39th at 17:08.64.
Redshirt sophomore Reid Belanger, redshirt sophomore Bridgid Selfors and senior Paige Fatland all crossed the finish line together to finish up the women's race, recording 16th-, 17th- and 18th-place finishes with times of 19:58.47, 20:02.27 and 20:02.38, respectively.
Fatland's time of 20:02.38 is a new career-high, with her last PR having been set in 2017 with a time of 20:48.90.
Tulane has a few weeks off before the team heads to College Station, Texas to face off against Texas A&M on Oct. 19.
