Volleyball Announces Addition of Mackenzie Martin for 2020
Jan 17, 2020 | Women's Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – After wrapping up a stellar career where she was named her team's MVP as a senior and earned three consecutive trips to the Florida state tournament sweet 16 in one of the state's largest classes, the Tulane volleyball program has announced the addition of Mackenzie Martin to the Green Wave roster for the 2020 season.
Â
Martin, a six-foot outside hitter from Port Orange, Florida, graduated in December and has already enrolled in classes at Tulane along November signee Anna Davis who inked with Tulane last November.
Â
"To say we're excited to announce Kenzie as another part of our 2020 class today seems like an understatement. From our first interaction, it was clear that she was going to be the perfect fit for our program," Tulane Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Brian Yale said. "On court ability is easy to see, but you always hope to combine that with at least a few other intangibles. When you can check each and every box looking at character, maturity, work ethic, drive, etc., then it becomes a no-brainer."
Â
Over the course of her prep career at Spruce Creek High School, Martin played in over 300 sets and registered over 900 kills, averaging three kills per set with a .244 hitting percentage. She also produced over 130 blocks, 930 digs and 85 service aces.
Â
This past year as a senior and team captain, Martin set the school record in kills in a match with 28, while also setting the school mark in kills in a season with 418. The mark meant she averaged 4.8 kills per set on the campaign, and when coupled with her 341 digs and 36 blocks helped earn her the MaxPreps Spruce Creek Player of the Year award.
Â
She was named the Daytona Beach Journal Volleyball Player of the Year, as she was selected to participate in the North Florida All-Star Volleyball Classic.
Â
As a junior, Martin averaged 3.2 kills per set with 273 for the season as she helped lead the Hawks to their third consecutive appearance in the state regional semifinals, setting a new personal season best in digs with 341. She picked up a trio of honors in in earning first-team all-city, all-district and all-region selections.
Â
After finding her footing as a freshman in 2016, Martin blossomed as a sophomore in 2017 as she went from having 32 kills the year before to 194 that season, hitting .208 at the net, while going from five digs to 245 the next year. She ended the campaign in the regional semifinals and earned second-team all-city, all-district and all-region honors.
Â
On the club level as a member of the Orlando Tampa Volleyball Academy, she was a part of a team that placed as the top team in the state of Florida at the USAV Girls Junior Nationals, finishing 11th overall in that competition and 12th in the AAU National Championships both in the open division.
Â
With a 4.1 GPA and ranked in the top 150 of her graduating class, Martin was an honor roll student and was named the Spruce Creek Academic Athlete of the Month, along with earning the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Academic All-State Award.
Â
"The ability for Kenzie to join us immediately this spring was simply an added bonus. We're thankful that she, and her family, felt as strongly about her fit at Tulane, and within our program, as we did," Yale said. "We can't wait to get a jump on next season with not one, but now two members of our 2020 class."
