Tulane Falls at North Texas as Rachow Enters the Green Wave History Book
Nov 14, 2025 | Women's Volleyball
DENTON, Texas – After dropping the first set Friday night, the Tulane volleyball team fought back to tie the match before North Texas bounced back and won the next two sets to claim the match at the North Texas Volleyball Center. The four-set result (21-25, 25-17, 14-25, 12-25) moves Tulane to 11-15 (3-12) as the Mean Green improves to 21-7 (11-4).
Tulane had 51 digs on the night as North Texas posted 56. The Mean Green held a higher hitting clip at .261 with 56 kills and 20 errors on 138 swings. Tulane posted a mark of .171 with 40 kills and 19 miscues on 123 attempts. Aces were nearly even with North Texas holding a slight edge, 7-5.
Zoe Rachow led the way for Tulane as she made history, dishing 37 helpers to improve her career total to 1,765. She has surpassed Cappy Meyer (1,740) to enter the Green Wave's all-time top 10 for career assists.
Avery Burks was the top recipient of Rachow, notching 18 kills. Ava Derbes joined Burks in double figures with 10 kills.
Defensively, Dayla Ortiz led the way with 16 digs. Rachow and Lily Wedman each had seven behind her. Sabrina Skyers paced the team at the net with four blocks as Lauryn Mack was right on her heels with three denials. At the service line, Ashley Sturzoiu and Lily Wedman each sent home two aces. Wedman's total is a new career high.
The first set was a see-saw battle that featured 10 ties and three lead changes. North Texas claimed the opening point of the night, but Avery Burks put home a kill to spark a four-point run that was highlighted by an ace from Ashley Sturzoiu and a block by Sabrina Skyers. The Mean Green pushed back to pull level, and the teams began to jostle for control. After Tulane's early 4-1 lead, no team led by three points or more until the very end of the frame. A Burks kill had the Wave up 20-18 before the Mean Green went on a six-point run to lead 24-20. Burks kept the set alive, but North Texas claimed the next point to win the set 25-21.
The early goings of the second stanza proved to be more of the same with both teams playing tightly. A Mean Green service error helped Tulane sideout for a 10-8 lead. With Annabelle He serving, the Wave orchestrated a four-point run for a 13-8 lead. Skyers later put home a kill to kick off a four-point swing that pushed the Tulane advantage to 19-11. North Texas gave a late effort to climb back into the set, but the Wave held firm as a Maddy McLin and Burks tandem block created set point, and a few rallies later the set officially belonged to Tulane, 25-17.
Set three was again close early with Ava Derbes delivering a kill to bring Tulane within 7-5. However, North Texas won the next four points and put forth an overall 9-3 run. The Wave provided an effort late to battle back, but the hole proved too deep to climb out of as the Mean Green pulled back ahead in the match with a 25-14 set three win.
North Texas opened the fourth frame by claiming the first four points. Lauryn Mack broke the spell to get Tulane on the board. Burks brought the Wave within 8-5, and Tulane would get within 11-7 shortly thereafter, but a five-point Mean Green run stretched the margin to 16-7. Tulane could not overcome this deficit despite its best efforts, dropping the final set 25-12 as North Texas claimed a four-set home win.
The regular season finale is up next as the Green Wave heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a Sunday afternoon clash on November 16. First serve against the Golden Hurricane is set for 1:00 p.m. with the contest streaming on ESPN+.
