Men's Tennis Collects 4-3 Road Win at LSU
Jan 31, 2020 | Men's Tennis
BATON ROUGE, La. - The Tulane men's tennis team completed its first comeback of the season, earning a 4-3 road win at LSU on Friday evening at the LSU Tennis Complex.
"The guys were in a tough place after doubles, and they got a little bit of a beatdown there," head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras said. "They were resilient today, and we challenged them that today is a day with no excuses. I was really proud of the way they responded after the tough doubles point in a tough environment with a lot of pressure."
Tulane (3-2) got off to an unbalanced start, dropping a pair of doubles matches on courts one and three, respectively, as LSU (5-2) claimed the doubles point and a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
With their backs against the wall, the Green Wave showed a dominant presence early in singles, claiming the first set on four courts. Junior and 90th-ranked Hamish Stewart continued his hot start to the spring, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ronald Hohmann on court two, to tie the match, 1-1. Stewart improves to 5-0 on the spring and 12-5 overall.
Tulane continued its rally on court one, as senior and 32nd-ranked Ewan Moore closed out Malik Bhatnagar, 6-3, 6-4, to give the Wave their first lead. Senior Tim Ruetzel was next to finish, topping Nick Watson, 6-4, 7-5, on court six to push the Tigers to the brink.
Leading 3-1 for a prolonged period, the Green Wave finally clinched thanks to junior Akos Kotorman on court six, who battled back from a lost first set, 6-1, to win the next two frames, 6-2 and 6-1, to give Tulane the permanent advantage.
LSU picked up two more points with wins on courts three and four, respectively, as the match concluded.
Tulane returns home to host Virginia Tech on Sunday, February 2. First serve is set for noon at the City Park Tennis Center.
