Men’s Tennis Faces Mississippi State, Texas Tech in Starkville

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's tennis team heads to Starkville, Mississippi for two matches this weekend, beginning Friday, February 7 at 20th-ranked Mississippi State. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
The Green Wave (3-3) will turn around and face Texas Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Tulane's last trip to Starkville came in May 2019 for the NCAA Tournament. The Green Wave dropped their first-round matchup against South Alabama, 4-1.
SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI STATE
The Bulldogs (6-2) enter Friday's match coming off a 4-2 win over Miami (Fla.) in Fort Myers last weekend. They own a 5-1 record on their home courts this season with the lone setback coming in a 4-1 defeat against Georgia as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend. Mississippi State possesses two ranked singles players, including No. 27 Giovanni Oradini, who is 12-5 overall and 4-2 at No. 1 singles, and No. 61 Florian Broska who holds a 19-6 record including a 5-1 mark at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. They also have one doubles team ranked, as Broska and Nicolas Ocana are listed at No. 27 with a 4-1 record at the No. 1 spot this spring.
SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
The Red Raiders (3-3) enter the weekend in the midst of a three-match losing streak, with all three defeats came at the hands of ranked opponents. Texas Tech is led by one ranked singles player, Ilgiz Valiev, who is listed at No. 62 nationally. In doubles, Parker Wynn and Bjorn Thomson hold the No. 60 spot in the poll. Last February, the Red Raiders earned a 4-2 home win over the 19th-ranked Green Wave.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Green Wave possess two players listed in the ITA's national singles rankings, led by senior Ewan Moore at No. 49, as junior Hamish Stewart is listed at No. 64.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Tulane will play a minimum of 10 teams that earned NCAA Tournament bids in 2019, including Stanford, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Texas, TCU, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, UCF and USF. Texas claimed the 2019 NCAA title, while TCU reached the quarterfinals. California, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State and Stanford all reached the round of 16.
