Men’s Basketball Signs Transfer Ryan Murphy
Apr 15, 2020 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – After competing at the University of Pittsburgh last season, graduate transfer Ryan Murphy has signed his grant-in-aid to officially join second-year head coach Ron Hunter and the Tulane men's basketball program for the 2020-21 campaign.
Possessing one year of remaining eligibility, Murphy becomes the third newcomer to join the Green Wave for the 2020-21 season along with incoming freshmen Sion James and Jadan Coleman who signed National Letters of Intent in November.
"Ryan is a big-time shooter," Hunter said. "He has a lot of experience and played at a high level in the ACC, which makes him a valuable asset for our team going into next season."
A native of Calabasas, Calif., Murphy appeared in 30 games at Pitt and made 12 starts, averaging 7.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. He also led the Panthers in 3-pointers made (42) and 3-point percentage (.331), while making multiple treys in 13 different contests.
Murphy scored in double-figures 11 times, including 13 points in the season-opener against Florida State. He followed up that performance with a career-high 28 points on 10-for-17 shooting, including four 3-pointers, in a win over Nicholls State. In conference play, he scored 18 points with a season-high four assists in 40 minutes of court time against Wake Forest.
Murphy began his collegiate career as a freshman at Charlotte in 2017-18, before playing at New Mexico Junior College in 2018-19.
His high school career included stops at Fairfield Prep [Conn.] and Wilbraham & Monson Prep School [Mass.] before returning to Calabasas High School in Southern California. He led the Coyotes to a 26-8 record and appearances in the CIF 3AA Sectional Final Four and Division 3 regional finals. Murphy earned all-league, All-Ventura County, all-region and first team California Division 3AA all-state honors as a senior. He was rated the sixth-best player in California coming out of high school by ESPN.
