NEW ORLEANS -Â As the Green Wave prepares for the upcoming 2020-21 season, TulaneGreenWave.com will introduce you to the next wave of incoming freshmen that will compete for Tulane, beginning in the fall. Check out TulaneGreenWave.com each Friday throughout the spring to learn more about the newest member of the Green Wave swimming and diving team.
Today's Incoming Freshman Spotlight features Gianna Spremullo from Narragansett, R.I.
What's something that makes you excited to be part of the Green Wave?
"Throughout my recruiting trip at Tulane, I felt such a warm welcome, and I could see the Green Wave bond was like a family. They made me feel like I was at a home far away from home. Everything seemed to fit perfectly. Homeland security is something I've always seen myself majoring in and I'm thrilled to be able to pursue it at Tulane. I'm also extremely excited to be a part of the women's swim team and make unforgettable memories together during my next four years."
Are you nervous about anything starting college?
"One thing I am nervous about is being far from my family in Rhode Island. It was highly comforting to know the school is one of the most geographically diverse in the country and that many others will find themselves in the same situation."
What were your first impressions when you visited New Orleans and Tulane?
"It was my first time ever traveling to New Orleans on my swimming recruiting trip at Tulane University. Unsure what to expect, I walked onto the campus with an open mind. I was undeniably impressed by the swimming program, academic opportunities, and culture of the university. I had left Tulane University hoping it would be my new home for the next four years."
Is there anywhere you're excited to go again or looking forward to around the city?
"I am excited for the well known events in New Orleans like the Jazz Festival and Mardi Gras. One thing I love is trying and experiencing new things, so I'm really looking forward to discovering more about New Orelans culture."
How do you hope to contribute to the Swim and Dive Team?
"The strong bond the women's swim and dive team held really made an impression on me, and made me excited for college swimming. Not only do I want the team to be more successful than they ever have before, but I also want to personally contribute to that positive energy and excitement because I believe that's just as important."
And lastly, what is something unique about you?
"The past four years I've been at an all girls catholic high school called Saint Mary Academy Bay View in Rhode Island. Women's empowerment has been very evident for me coming from an all girls school and being raised by a single mom. In the time I was there, it was very clear that Tulane's swimming and diving program fully-expressed the importance of a strong commitment to women's athletics."
