SENIOR DAY: Tulane Honors Sailing's Stephen Hahn
Apr 28, 2020 | Sailing
EDITOR'S NOTE: Over the next few months, TulaneGreenWave.com will honor the 35 seniors that had their respective collegiate careers cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic through this SENIOR DAY series. We hope you the fans enjoy this series and remember the seniors from the 2020 graduating class.
In Tulane sailing’s inaugural varsity season in 2018, Stephen Hahn finished first in the Garner-Tullis Team Race, also earning a second-place finish in the SEISA Team Race Championship. The Johns Creek, Georgia, native helped the Green Wave to a second-place finish in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta in the fall of 2019, also leading the Olive and Blue to a second-place finish in the Patrick Sullivan Burtchaell Regatta. Hahn will remain in New Orleans next year, planning to pursue his master's degree in biomedical engineering at Tulane.
Today, we honor Hahn in our SENIOR DAY web series.
Q AND A WITH STEPHEN HAHN
What made you want to come to Tulane?
"A lot of things led me to choose Tulane. The first is that many of my family members went to Tulane, and I have been visiting Tulane and New Orleans since before I can remember. The first time I ever thought, 'I want to go to school here,' was in 2009 at my cousin’s Tulane graduation. The whole weekend was amazing, the campus was beautiful, there was food and music everywhere and commencement was in the Superdome! I then came back to visit many times over the years and went to several campus tours while in high school. The final push that set Tulane apart from other schools that I was deciding between was the scholarship I received. I was awarded the Deans’ Honors Scholarship, which covers full tuition for the four years. That was the final motivation for me to commit to Tulane and spend an incredible four years there."
What is your favorite memory from your time at Tulane?
"My favorite memories from Tulane all lead to spending quality time with the sailing team. The one set of memories that stand out the most is from our annual Thanksgiving that we have as a team. Every year, we put on a huge potluck right before Thanksgiving break and call it Sails-giving. Everyone dresses up and brings a classic Thanksgiving dish, and we all spend the night eating and reminiscing on the fall season. All of the sailors are always invited, both past and present. Seniors will sit around and reminisce on their past years with each other and tell stories of the “good ole days” to the underclassmen. At the end of the night, we give out paper plate awards where we a highlight a funny experience or memory of each team member from the season, like “best capsize” or “most likely to butt dial coach at 2 a.m.” Every Sails-giving has been a great time and great memory that I will always hold on to."
What's next?
"Next year I will be completing a master's degree in biomedical engineering here at Tulane. Tulane offers a 4+1 master's program in biomedical engineering that I have been accepted to and will complete along with a master's thesis. I am excited to spend one more year at Tulane and continue my biomedical engineering education."
