Baseball's Grant Mathews Earns Academic All-America First Team Honors

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball senior infielder Grant Mathews has been named one of 12 members of the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Baseball First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Mathews becomes just the third Tulane baseball student-athlete to Academic All-America First Team recognition and the 11th player overall in program history to earn an Academic All-America accolade. The Green Wave's only other baseball student-athletes to earn first-team recognition are Hunter Williams (2017) and Neal Comarda (1978).

The New Orleans native and Metairie Park Country Day School product received his bachelor's degree in communications from Tulane University and graduated with full honors with a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. He was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 Team selection.

On the diamond in 2020, Mathews was picked to the All-American Athletic Conference Preseason Team, before starting all 17 games at first base and helping the Green Wave start the year with a 15-2 record. Hed led the team in batting average (.373), hits (25), RBI (22), home runs (4) and sacrifice flies (3), while finishing second in runs scored (19) and slugging percentage (.612). Mathews also posted .423 on-base percentage, while compiling nine multi-hit efforts and seven games with multiple RBI.
For his career, Mathews appeared in 113 games with 97 starts while batting .333 across nearly 400 at-bats. He produced 132 hits, 82 runs scored, 18 home runs and 96 RBI while drawing 40 walks. In the classroom, Mathews was selected to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team every semester.
