Jan 28, 2021 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team picked up its fourth straight win to start the 2021 season with a 5-2 home win over crosstown foe University of New Orleans on Thursday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (4-0) set the tone early in doubles, as graduate student Mary Caroline Meredith and junior Adelaide Lavery teamed up for a convincing 6-1 win on court one. The Privateers (0-1) responded with a 6-3 win on court three while holding a 4-3 advantage over halfway through the deciding match on court two. The freshman duo of Kristen Borland and Charlotte Russell were dominant all the way to the finish and won the final three games to complete the 6-4 win and secure the doubles point.
Tulane extended the advantage to 2-0 early in singles when Borland earned a 6-2, 6-3 win on court four, but UNO got on the scoreboard shortly thereafter with a straight set victory on court one. The Privateers drew even, 2-2, with another straight set win on court two, but Russell was quick to put the Wave back on top with a 7-5, 7-6(7) victory on court six to push the New Orleans to the brink.
Sophomore Lahari Yelamanchili battled back from a lost first set to win the next two, 6-1 and 6-4, to clinch the match on court three. Freshman Cora Barber won in similar fashion by bouncing back from a lost first set to win the final two frames, 6-4 and 7-6(4), to score Tulane's fifth and final team point of the day.
Up next, Tulane heads to Baton Rouge for a road tilt at LSU on Wednesday, February 3 at 5 p.m.
