Track and Field Takes Wins in Houston, Sets New Records in Kansas

HOUSTONâThe Tulane women's track and field team continued its great start to the indoor season with their second meet at the H-Town SpeedCity Series. In Kansas, at the KSU DeLoss Dodds Invitational, the Green Wave's pentathlon record fell as part of a pair of outstanding performances.
Earning a top mark for the Green Wave in Houston was Trina Malej, who brought it home with a win in the triple jump at a distance of 12.58m, topping her mark two weeks ago.
Also impressive, Kyah Loyd ran a competitive 8.40 in the 60m hurdles, improving her time from the first meet this season.

The Green Wave heated up earlier in the morning with the pole vault, as Kristina Leggas placed second with a distance of 3.80m. Nastja Modic took fourth with a distance of 3.65m and Kate Sander finished seventh in her first collegiate meet with a distance of 3.50m.

In the 400m, Louise Jones earned a personal record of 56.91 which was good for fifth place. Oneke Gwan placed ninth with a time of 57.97 and Asja Thompson also earned a new personal best time of 57.99 seconds, earning a 10th-place finish.

For the second week in a row, Nicole Phanuef established a new personal record in the 3000m with a time of 10:29.79, bringing in another second place finish for the Green Wave.

Meanwhile in Kansas at the KSU DeLoss Dodds Invitational, Migle Muraskaite and Kristen O'Handley established top marks in the pentathlon.

Muraskaite placed second and was the top collegiate finisher with an overall score of 3829 points, which puts her in the Tulane record books as the new No. 1 scorer for the pentathlon. Muraskaite set a new personal record in the high jump with a distance of 1.67m and the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.83. The two performances place her fifth on Tulane's all-time list in the 60m hurdles and sixth for the high jump. Additionally, her shot put throw of 12.80m earned her seventh place in the record book.

O'Handley finished fourth in the competition with a score of 3560 points and broke into the Tulane record book with a fourth place showing. O'Handley set a new personal record in the 800m with a time of 2:24.22, and her 60m hurdle mark of 8.96 places her ninth all-time for the Green Wave.
"The highlight was in Kansas with Migle Muraskaite and Kristen O'Handley. I am so happy that in their first time out representing our program they competed so well and came away with high marks and impressive honors," director of cross country and track and field Eric Peterson said. "Houston was led by Trina Malej and Kyah Loyd. We had a great opportunity to compete against several of our conference team opponents. It was a good indication that our team is making great progress. This weekend showed a very solid step forward for our program."

Up next, the Green Wave travels back to Houston on Saturday, February 13, for their final meet in the Speed-City Series.
