Volleyball Drops Heart Breaker to SMU in Five

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University volleyball team suffered a five-set loss on Sunday to the SMU Mustangs, falling 3-2 (25-15, 19-25, 18-25, 25-23, 11-15) inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.

With the setback, the Green Wave dropped to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Redshirt senior Lexie Douglas led the Green Wave with 20 kills. Douglas, was one kill off from matching her season high and two kills off from her career best. Teammates Kaya Dinkins, Anna Davis and Yvette Burcescu also posted double-digit kill totals for Tulane with 15, and 10 kills respectively. Burcescu also led the team in blocks with four.

Sophomore Mackenzie Martin chipped in defensively for Tulane with 41 digs, the most digs in a match for a Green Wave player and 4th most all-time in a match in the AAC.

Tulane took the early lead in the match, posting a dominating 25-15 victory. The opening set remained close early, as SMU trailed by just three points (7-10). Tulane then went on to win seven of the next ten points to open a 17-10 advantage. Tulane held SMU to just five points for the remainder of the frame to secure the win.Â
The second set followed a similar path to the first, as Tulane remained with striking distance in the early going and was down three. SMU would go on to claim five of the next eight points and open a 13-8 advantage. Tulane fought back to close within two at 17-15, but it would get no closer as the Mustangs secured a 25-19 win.

The Mustangs claimed the third match posting a close 25-18 victory. The two squads battled back and forth meeting with six ties in the match, the last being 11-11. SMU then went on a four-point streak to pull away 15-11. The Green Wave would continue to fight, but let the Mustangs ran away with a 25-18 set win.Â

Tulane cut the Mustangs match advantage in the fourth, evening up the victories 2-2, as it posted a hard-fought 25-23 win. The Green Wave's fourth set win was highlighted by a .405 attack percentage in the frame. Both teams were tied at five apiece in the beginning stages of the set util the Green Wave took the lead on a kill from Lexie Douglas. The Wave went on to never lose the lead and win the set 25-23.

The final set opened with Tulane down 6-2. The Green Wave tried to fight out of the deficit but couldn't climb back dropping the set 15-11.

The Green Wave return to action on Oct. 22 to take on ECU in Greenville, North Carolina. First serve against the Pirates is set for 6 p.m.
