Tulane Sailing Climbs to Finish Fifth in Atlantic Coast Championship
Oct 24, 2021 | Sailing
St. Mary's City, Md. – The Tulane University sailing COED team climbed up three spots in the standings to finish fifth out of 18 teams in the Atlantic Coast Championship Sunday.
Â
"The team had a great comeback today," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We had a couple hiccups early on where we were in great position only to let some points slip away. As the day went on we got progressively stronger and closed out the regatta strongly with a big jump up the leaderboard at the end."
Â
The Green Wave moved up three spots after solid racing performances in the A and B Divisions. The A Division team for the Olive and Blue posted 42 points while the B Division squad finished with points on day two on the water of the St. Mary's River. Those performances bring the totals to 75 points for the A Division and 82 for the B Division.
Â
"Cameron and Andrea were as solid as ever, and coolly came back from some tough spots," Higgins said. "Asher and Gillian were able to put some good results on the board as well. Ciara and Lucy really put it together in the afternoon. They had by far the best score line in the last four races when we made our move up."
The Wave finished with 157 points just three out of a fourth-place finish behind Stanford. Top-ranked Yale took home the Atlantic Coast Championship title finishing with 94 points.
Â
"It's such a huge relief to know our team has so much depth at this level," Higgins said. "We've been progressing well all fall, and this is easily our best COED finish to date for the program. It's still a long way off until the spring championships, but this was a really good result."
Seventeen of the 18 teams competing in the Atlantic Coast Championship are ranked in the COED top-20, including Tulane which is ranked 11th. Â
