Men's Tennis Shuts Out Florida State, 4-0
Feb 13, 2021 | Men's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE - The Tulane men's tennis team collected its second road win in as many matches with a convincing 4-0 victory over Florida State.
The win was Tulane's (5-2) second in a row against FSU on its home court after earning a 4-2 win on Jan. 27, 2019 to earn the Green Wave their first ITA National Team Indoor Championships appearance in program history.
"Once again, it is great to be competing," director of tennis Mark Booras said. "We're all very great to be on the court, and you could see it in everyone's fight today on both sides of the net. I was pleased with the way we battled in doubles while facing some very tough situations. Singles started well on a bunch of courts and our guys who were down sets found ways to get back in it."
The Wave found themselves in a tough battle for the doubles point to begin the afternoon, but the duo of senior Luis Erlenbusch and freshman Fynn Kuenkler cruised to a 6-2 win on court three for an early advantage.
The Seminoles (3-3) grabbed a 6-4 win on court one, and with court two hanging in the balance in a 6-6 tie, senior Akos Kotorman and freshman Billy Suarez took control of the tiebreaker to win, 7-3, and clinch the doubles point.
Tulane has now won the doubles point in all seven of its matches this season.
The Green Wave controlled the momentum early in singles, winning the first set on courts three, four, five and six, respectively. Freshman Rafael de Alba was first to finish, earning a 6-3, 6-2 win on court six, before Erlenbusch won in straight sets on court three, 6-2, 7-6(5), to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Despite dropping the first set on court one, 6-3, senior Hamish Stewart bounced back in dominant fashion to win the second, 6-1, before closing out the third frame, 6-2, to clinch the match.
"It was nice to see our guys trust their games and close them out when they had the chances.," Booras said. "It was a great team effort today. We will have to recover fast for another huge battle tomorrow."
Tulane makes a quick turnaround to face the University of Miami (Fla.) on Sunday, February 14 in a neutral site match in Tallahassee. First serves are scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT).
