Men's Tennis' Upset Bid Falls Short Against No. 6 Texas, 4-3
Feb 27, 2021 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - Facing the highest-ranked team to ever come to City Park, the Tulane men's tennis team's upset bid against sixth-ranked Texas fell just short, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (6-4) faced an uphill battle in doubles, as the Longhorns (9-3) jumped out to a pair of 4-1 leads on courts one and two, respectively. Texas was able to close out both by 6-2 counts to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
The Longhorns extended their advantage to 2-0 with a straight-set win on court six to get singles started, but Tulane responded in a big way when freshman Rafael de Alba closed out a 6-3, 7-5 win on court five, before Billy Suarez finished off a dominant second set for a 7-5, 6-0 win on court four to level the scoreboard, 2-2.
Texas earned a three-set victory on court one to reclaim the lead, but fifth-year senior and 53rd-ranked Ewan Moore bounced back from a tough first-set defeat in a tiebreaker to win the final two frames, 6-2, 6-4, to outlast 57th-ranked Siem Woldeab on court two.
With the match tied three-all, court three proved to be the deciding match, where fifth-year senior Luis Erlenbusch countered a 7-5 loss in the first set to win the second, 7-6(3), against 78th-ranked Micah Braswell. However, Braswell took a commanding 4-0 lead in the third set before closing it out, 6-1, to clinch for the Longhorns.
Up next, Tulane heads to Dallas to face American Athletic Conference foe SMU on Saturday, March 6 at 10 a.m. The Green Wave will then face Oral Roberts at 2 p.m., in a neutral-site match.
