Feb 28, 2021 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team collected its eight straight home win with a 4-2 victory over South Alabama on Sunday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
Tulane (7-3) got the afternoon started with an impressive showing in doubles, pulling out to early leads on all three courts. Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell were first to finish off a 6-2 win on court three, before Adelaide Lavery and Kristen Borland won by the same count on court two to clinch the doubles point.
The Green Wave have now won the doubles point in all seven of their victories during the 2021 season.
Lavery extended the Wave's advantage to 2-0 early in singles when she defeated Cami Moreno, 7-6(3), 6-1, at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. South Alabama (6-3) responded with a straight-set win on court six to cut its deficit in half, before sophomore and 108th-ranked Mackenzie Clark closed out a hard-fought, 7-5, 7-5 win over Nikola Kohoutova on court two. After winning the first set, Clark trailed, 5-4, in the second frame before winning the subsequent three games to close it out.
The Jaguars pulled back within one, 3-2, with a three-set, comeback win on court one, but Borland was already in a similar position on court four for Tulane. Despite dropping her first set, 6-2, Borland was dominant in the next two frames to win by 6-3 and 6-2 counts, respectively, to clinch the match.
Tulane heads to Birmingham for a pair of road matches next weekend, March 6-7. The Green Wave will play at Samford at 1 p.m., on March 6, before facing UAB the following day at noon.
