Sailing Travels to College of Charleston Saturday
Mar 19, 2021 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane University sailing team is hitting the road to compete in a regatta at the College of Charleston this weekend.
Â
The race will be in the team racing format where two teams of three boats go head-to-head on a closed course.
Â
There will be four other teams at the event, two of which Tulane has yet to face this season. The new opponents will be the College of Charleston, who will field a coed and women's team, and Old Dominion. Jacksonville and South Florida will round out the field. Tulane has faced both of these teams twice this season.
Â
"We know what to expect with Jacksonville and USF, as we've seen them twice now, but this will be a new test with ODU and Charleston," Tulane head coach Charles Higgins said. "These two programs have longstanding winning traditions, are well coached, and should provide some really tough competition for us."
Â
Tulane's starting skippers will be freshman Marcus Huttunen, sophomore Cameron Giblin and freshman Thad Lettsome. The skippers will be joined by the starting crews of junior Ciara Rodriguez-Horan, sophomore Kit Stoll and freshman Gillian Perrell, respectively.
Â
The reserves for the regatta will be sophomore Lydia Brown and freshman Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez.
Â
"We are very excited with the opportunity to compete this weekend," Higgins said. "The team has been practicing hard since our last event with a focused approach on some specific areas of our game, and they've really begun to come together. I believe we are well prepared, and we can't wait to get racing."
Â
After two weeks off from competition, the Wave will compete in four different events in the next two weeks. They will look to start this crucial stretch of the season on the right foot this weekend.
