Women's Tennis Comes Up Short Against No. 34 Rice, 4-3
Mar 20, 2021 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team's upset bid against 34th-ranked Rice fell just short in a 4-3 setback Saturday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (9-7) got ahead early in doubles when sophomore Lahari Yelamanchili and freshman Charlotte Russell claimed a 6-3 win on court three, but the Owls (10-2) leveled the race with a -4 win on court two. Tied 5-5 on court one, Rice got a late break to take court one, 7-5, and clinch for a 1-0 team lead heading into singles.
Tulane tied things up when junior Adelaide Lavery closed out a 6-1, 6-3 win on court four over Maria Budin, but the Owls continued the seesaw battle by winning in straight sets on court six. Freshman Kristen Borland made it 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Diae El Jardi on court five.
After Rice won on court three, sophomore and 108th-ranked Mackenzie Clark made her first appearance playing atop the singles lineup and tied the match one last time, 3-3, with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Michaela Haet.
However, Rice pulled out one more straight-set win on court two to escape with the 4-3 victory, ending the Green Wave's upset bid.
Tulane heads back on the road for its next two matches beginning Sunday, March 28 at Florida Gulf Coast, before heading traveling to American Athletic Conference foe USF on March 31.
