NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane University sailing team finished second in the team race and fifth in the fleet race in its interconference regatta at Navy on Sunday.
Â
"This entire weekend was an incredible success all around," Tulane head coach Charles Higgins said. "There are so many lessons learned, and we can definitely see the positive progress we are making each day."
Â
Team Green Wave finished the team race with a (1-2-5) victory over team Angry Wave and a (3-4-6) loss to Navy to finish with a 7-3 overall record and a second-place finish.
Â
"Team Green Wave had an absolute battle with Navy's top team, with several lead changes happening all the way around the race course," Higgins said. "Navy's experience helped them as they were able to seize a late advantage and take the race, in what was essentially a winner take all race."
Â
In the fleet race, Tulane fielded three teams, the Green Wave Women, Green Wave, and Angry Wave. The Green Wave Women led Tulane's teams with a score of 95. The team was made up of the skipper-crew pairings of Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and Grace Siwicki, and Mia Hanes and Abigail Borggaard. Rodriguez-Horan and Siwicki had the third lowest score of any boat with a 24.
Â
Team Green Wave, which was made up of skippers Cameron Giblin and Marcus Huttunen and crew Lydia Brown and Gillian Perrell. Giblin and Brown were the fifth-fastest boat of the day, posting a score of 36.
Â
Team Angry Wave finished ninth with a score of 132. The team consisted of skippers Caroline Benson, Thad Lettsome, and William Keenan and crews Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez and Katherin Cartiglia.
Â
"Bad weather with heavy rain and lightning kept us ashore for most of the morning, but we were able to complete the second round before being done for the day," Higgins said. "Team Angry Wave had a great start in their first race, but a couple unforced errors early in the race allowed Charleston to jump out to a handy lead and never looked back."
Â
Navy completed their weekend with a victory in the fleet race and Charleston's Cougars 1 team came in second.
Â
"Everyone has definitely stepped it up in a major way, and that progress is exactly what we need right now as we get ready to make a push into the championship portion of our season," Higgins concluded.
