Women's Tennis Wins Road Finale at FGCU, 4-3
Mar 31, 2021 | Women's Tennis
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Tulane women's tennis team collected its 10th win of the season and concluded its 2021 road slate with an impressive 4-3 comeback victory at Florida Gulf Coast University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Green Wave (10-8) collected their first win of the year without claiming the doubles point. They were forced into an early hole when the Eagles (4-5) earned wins on doubles courts one and three, respectively, to claim a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Tulane stormed back in singles by taking the first set on five courts, before five total matches ended up going three sets. Freshman Cora Barber tied the match, 1-1, with the only straight-set victory of the day, 6-2, 6-3, on court six to begin the seesaw battle, as FGCU closed out court two to reclaim the lead.
The Green Wave drew even again, 2-2, when junior Adelaide Lavery outlasted Alba Retortillo, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, on court four, but the Eagles countered with another win on court five to push the Wave to the brink.
Despite the deficit, Tulane got a clutch performance from its sophomore class, as Lahari Yelamanchili battled to a 7-6(10), 1-6, 6-0 triumph over Emma Bardet on court three to level the scoreboard one last time, 3-3. That left Mackenzie Clark in the deciding match on court one where she won the first set, 6-4, and dropped the second, 7-5, to Maja Ornberg. Clark earned a break in the third set to create separation before clinching the match with a 6-4, third-set win.
Up next, Tulane closes out the regular season with three consecutive home matches beginning Wednesday, April 7 against Nicholls State at 2:30 p.m.
