Sailing Finishes Weekend at USF Strong
Mar 7, 2021 | Sailing
TAMPA – The Tulane University Sailing Team came out on top in the fleet race on day two of its regatta at South Florida.
Â
The Green Wave took on Jacksonville and USF in a fleet race that featured ten teams of two boats, one in the A division and one in the B division.
Â
"Today's conditions were challenging, as it was quite windy and choppy on the water, and our team came out strong," Tulane head coach Charles Higgins said. "Certainly, Asher [Zittrer] and Andrea [Riefkohl-Gonzalez] had a great day and set the tone early with convincing wins in the first three races. Their consistency helped them build a lead that was insurmountable even as other boats began finishing stronger late in the day."
Tulane fielded four teams, Team Angry Wave, Team Green Wave, Team Green Wave Women and Team Riptide.
Â
Team Green Wave came in first, posting a score of 98 points. The B division boat featured sophomore Asher Zittrer and freshman Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez, who put up an impressive score of 38. Zittrer and Riefkohl-Gonzalez won four of the ten races and came in third in four others. The A division boat, crewed by freshmen Marcus Huttunen and Gillian Perrell, posted a 60, winning two races, placing second in two and placing third in two.
Â
Team Angry Wave placed fourth with a score of 173 thanks to an impressive outing by their boat in the A division. Freshman Thad Lettsome and senior Katherine Cartiglia logged a 58, the third lowest on the day. The duo won one race and came in second in another.
Â
Team Green Wave Women came in seventh place, putting up a score of 213. Team Riptide placed eighth with a score of 238. The Riptide boat in the A division, featuring sophomore William Keenan and junior Grace Siwicki came in second in the sixth race and third in the ninth race.
Â
"It was also pleasing to see three more of our boats finishing in the top 5 overall," Higgins said. "Across the board we had a number of good performances on the day, and I am very pleased with our progress at this point in the season. We are looking forward to the next couple of weeks to work on our game before we head to a big event at the College of Charleston."
Â
Up next, Tulane will travel to the College of Charleston for a two-day regatta on March 20-21.
