
Beach Volleyball Goes 2-0 in Day One of Southern Miss Beach Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — The RV Tulane beach volleyball team (14-10, 3-8 CCSA) went 2-0 on Friday in day one of the Southern Miss Beach Invitational, sweeping Spring Hill College (5-0) before defeating RV UAB (3-2).
Senior Addison Hermstad and sophomore Samantha Mehlman continued with their winning behavior from the No. 2 position, taking down Spring Hill's Mikayla Boyer and Sarah Senft (21-14, 21-15) before defeating UAB's Emma Andraka and Dylynn Otte in three sets (19-21, 21-14, 15-9).
Also going 2-0 on Friday was graduate student Allie Olsonoski and freshman Maddie Speicher, beating Spring Hill's Leanne Sorrel and Allison Weimer on court three (21-7, 21-12) and UAB's Annie Pringle and Jenna Gathright in three sets on court four (15-21, 21-9, 15-10).Â
Graduate student Eva Torruella and sophomore Kendall Peters went 1-1 to open the weekend on court one, defeating Spring Hill's Kassandra Fairly and Payton Gidney in two sets (21-19, 21-13) before falling to UAB's Rachel Tam and Mikayla Law-Heese (17-21, 13-21).
Also defeating Spring Hill was graduate students Avery Arellano and Tarin Mergener from the No. 4 spot, earning the 21-13, 21-11 win over Natalie Bonner and Kyla Shappell before dropping a three-set match (18-21, 21-16, 13-15) to UAB's Salli Napolitano and Arden Copping on court three.
Seniors Rio Frohoff and Gabriella Becerra helped Tulane to a win over Spring Hill with a victory from the No. 5 position over Patty Blood and Brooke Borgmeyer, 14-21, 21-11, 15-11. The pair also defeated UAB's Jessica Ennis and Adriana Pereira in an exhibition match, 21-19, 21-10.Â
Earning the three-set win on court five to help the Green Wave to a win over the Blazers was sophomore Ashton Mares and freshman Lara Torruella, with 17-21, 21-11, 15-8 scores. The duo also earned the win over Spring Hill's BrileyJane Becker and Linnea Beger in straight sets, 21-10, 21-15, in an exhibition match.
The Olive and Blue are ready for day two of the Southern Miss Beach Invitational, competing against Louisiana Monroe at 12 p.m. and Southern Miss at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
