
Beach Volleyball Goes 4-0 at Southern Miss Invitational, Defeats ULM and USM Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — The Tulane beach volleyball team (16-10, 5-8 CCSA) went 4-0 this weekend in the Southern Miss Beach Invitational, defeating Louisiana Monroe (4-1) and Southern Miss (4-1) on Saturday to wrap up the Green Wave's weekend on the road.
Senior Addison Hermstad and sophomore Samantha Mehlman earned a three-set win over ULM's Abigail Elder and Kayla Gallant on court two in the first match of the day, 21-13, 20-22, 15-8, before defeating Southern Miss' Haley Hop and Valeria S. Papakyria, 21-13, 21-8.
Also earning wins over Louisiana Monroe and Southern Miss was graduate students Avery Arellano and Tarin Mergener from the No. 3 position, taking down Anna Demmer and Katie McKay in straight sets in the first match of the day, 21-14, 21-18, before beating Kellie Garraway and Breleigh Favre in the final match this weekend, 21-14, 21-14.
On court four, gradate student Allie Olsonoski and freshman Maddie Speicher teamed up, recording the win over ULM's Elizabeth Moreland and Holland Ponthieux in two sets, 21-18, 21-19 and USM's Olivia Hepworth and Madison Lawler in a thriller with 21-19 and 33-31 scores.
Also earning victories over Louisiana Monroe and Southern Miss was freshman Lara Torruella and sophomore Ashton Mares from the No. 5 spot, defeating Warhawks' Ina Gosen and Abbey Bufkin (21-16, 21-19) and Golden Eagles' Melanie Miller and Kaylie Beck (21-13, 21-15).
In an exhibition match against ULM, seniors Rio Frohoff and Gabriella Becerra earned the win over Brooke Hoven and Avery Reynolds, 21-16, 21-13. Becerra teamed up with junior Haley Gibson in an exhibition match against Southern Miss, recording a convincing win over Hallie Phelan and Faith Miller, 21-7, 21-11.
Next up, the Green Wave are set to head to Fort Worth, Texas, competing against Houston Baptist and TCU on Friday before facing Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Boise State on Saturday.
