Beach Volleyball Goes 1-1 to Open TCU Invitational

NEW ORLEANS — The RV Tulane beach volleyball team (17-11, 5-9 CCSA) went 1-1 on Friday to open day one of the TCU Invitational, defeating Houston Baptist (4-1) before falling to No. 7 TCU (1-4).
In the first match of the day, graduate student Eva Torruella and sophomore Kendall Peters teamed up to take down Houston Baptists' Brennan Miller and Maddie Butters in straight sets on court one, 21-17, 21-9.
Senior Addison Hermstad and sophomore Samantha Mehlman continued with their success from the No. 2 position, beating HBU's Kylie Bryan and Danielle Okeke with 21-17 and 21-18 scores.
Helping the Green Wave to a win in match one was graduate students Tarin Mergener and Avery Arellano, who defeated the Huskies' Natalie Bennett and Lindsay Harris in two sets, 21-11, 21-19.
Seniors Rio Frohoff and Gabriella Becerra were successful on court five against Houston Baptist, defeating Mary Alper and Kristen Kleymeyer, 25-23, 21-10.
The only pair to defeat the Horned Frogs was freshman Lara Torruella and sophomore Ashton Mares from the No. 5 spot, taking down TCU's Caroline White and Jordan Westendorff in three sets (23-21, 14-21, 15-10).
The Green Wave will be back in action for two matches on Saturday, taking on Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 8 a.m. and Boise State at 12:20 p.m. Live stats for both matches are available here.
