Men's Tennis Meets SMU in AAC Championship Quarterfinal

NEW ORLEANS - Seeded No. 2, the Tulane men's tennis team meets No. 7 seed SMU in the the quarterfinals of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday, April 22 at the USTA National Training Center in Lake Nona, Fla. First serve is set for 11:30 a.m. (CT).
With a victory, the Green Wave (14-6) will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between No. 3 seed USF (13-9) and No. 6 seed Tulsa (11-11) on Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday's championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
IN THE RANKINGS
In the latest ITA team rankings released on April 21, the Green Wave are ranked a season-high 19th in the national poll. In the singles rankings, senior Hamish Stewart is No. 23, while he and fifth-year senior Ewan Moore comprise the nation's No. 29 doubles tandem.
AAC CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Tulane enters this year's tournament as the No. 2 seed for the fourth consecutive time with its sight set on winning its second title since the 2018 season. The Green Wave are 4-1 in their first match in The American's championship event since joining the league in 2014-15.
SCOUTING SMU
The Mustangs (17-13) are currently ranked 50th in the ITA national team rankings and enter Thursday's matchup with four straight wins. Fourteen of their wins have come at home despite a 3-9 record in matches played away from their friendly confines and a 1-4 mark against conference foes this spring. In singles, Liam Krall owns a team-best 15-8 record this season, including a 5-0 mark on court one and a 7-5 ledger on court two. In doubles, Tomas Vaise and Juan Jose Bianchi own a No. 77 national ranking.
LAST TIME THEY MET - MARCH 6, 2021
Tulane battled back from a lost doubles point to secure its third road win of the season, 4-2, over SMU in Dallas. Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, the Green Wave scored three consecutive singles wins on courts two, three and six to claim a 3-1 advantage. Despite a singles win by the Mustangs, freshman Billy Suarez provided the clinch on court four with a three-set victory over Julian Steinhausen.
THE DOUBLES POINT
Tulane has won the doubles point in 15 of its 20 matches this season and own a combined 35-17 (.673) overall record. Stewart and Moore are 12-6 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, while freshman Billy Suarez and senior Akos Kotorman are 12-5 playing at the No. 2 position. Luis Erlenbusch and Billy Suarez are 10-3 at No. 3 and have won five consecutive matches.
ERLENBUSCH WINNING STREAK
Owning a team-leading 14-4 singles mark this spring, Luis Erlenbusch is playing some of the best tennis of his collegiate career and has won an eye-popping 10-consecutive matches and 13 of his last 15 contests. The winning streak began on March 6 with a straight-set win over SMU's Tomas Vaise.
CAGING ALL TIGERS!
The Green Wave collected three consecutive wins over teams nicknamed "Tigers" when they defeated Memphis (4-0) on March 13, Auburn (4-3) on March 19 and LSU (6-1) on March 21.
BOORAS WINS NO. 150
In his 12th season at the helm of the program, director of tennis and head coach Mark Booras earned his 150th career victory in Tulane's 4-3 home win over Auburn on March 19.
AAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Hamish Stewart was selected as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 16 for the fourth time in his career after receiving the recognition once as a junior in 2020 and twice in 2019 as a sophomore.
