Jul 28, 2021 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University men's basketball earned the 2020-21 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award, the association announced today.
As a team, the Green Wave posted a 3.439 cumulative GPA in the fall semester and a 3.198 GPA in the spring semester. Tulane had 13 athletes post a GPA of 3.0 or higher in one semester last year. The 11 players that posted the mark in both semesters were Ibrahim Ali, Benjamin Callahan-Gold, Jadan Coleman, Kevin Cross, Nobal Days, Jaylen Forbes, Sion, James, Oton Jankovic, Tylan Pope, Gabriel Watson and Alec Zaccardo. Ali and Zaccardo were named to the NABC Honors Court yesterday.
These awards recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2020-21 season.
To earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA, NAIA and Two-Year Colleges must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes on the basketball roster during the 2020-21 season.
About the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)
Located in Kansas City, Missouri, the NABC was founded in 1927 by Phog Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today's student-athletes. The five core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service, education and inclusion.
