Tulane Women’s Tennis Drops First Road Match of the Year at Tulsa, 6-1
Feb 11, 2022 | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – The Tulane University women's tennis team (3-2) fell in its first road match of the season as it took a 6-1 loss against fellow American Athletic Conference member Tulsa (6-1) on Friday.
"We had a slow start in doubles and Tulsa was very aggressive the entire match," head coach Maria Brito said. "We definitely started better in singles, and we had some great opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. I was very proud of the way we competed and fought the entire match. It was a lot closer than the score indicated, but we need to take advantage of our opportunities."
After the Green Wave dropped the doubles point, junior Lahari Yelamanchili continued her stellar start to the season in singles action picking up the first point of the day for Tulane defeating Maria Berlanga 6-3, 6-3. Mackenzie Clark took 94th-ranked Laia Conde Monfort to the brink falling in a tiebreaker in the second set while Kristen Borland picked up a win in her first set before coming up short in the third set against Valeryia Rozenkova.
"Tulsa is one of the best teams in our conference and in the nation so when you have those chances you have to execute," Brito said.
Up next, the Green Wave travels north to Wichita, Kansas, to face the Wichita Shockers on Sunday. The match between Tulane and the Shockers will begin at 9 a.m. at the Wichita Country Club.
