Feb 22, 2022 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University men's tennis team dropped its first home match of the year against in-state rival LSU 5-2 on Tuesday at the City Park Tennis Center. The Green Wave got out to a strong start securing the doubles point, but momentum shifted in singles play as Tulane lost five out of six singles matches.
Entering the match against the Tigers, Tulane had won three-straight matchups against LSU and six of the last seven matches.
The pairing of Fynn Kuenkler and Luc Hoeijmans got the Wave off to a strong start in doubles action defeating Kent Hunter and Boris Kozlov 6-2. Moments later Billy Suarez and Rafael de Alba claimed the doubles point for Tulane with a 6-3 victory over Nick Watson and Ronald Hohmann.
The tide changed in singles play as LSU won the first set on all six courts. Alex Bancila and Suarez battled on courts two and four for the Green Wave to each force a third set. After the Tigers tied the match 1-1, Suarez put Tulane back in front with a three-set win over Joao Graca 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. The momentum shifted back in favor of LSU as the Wave dropped each of the remaining singles matches to fall by a final score of 5-2.
Up next, the Green Wave hit the road to Montgomery, Alabama, to compete in the Blue Gray Invitational on Friday and Saturday, February 25-26.
