Tulane Men’s Tennis Goes 1-2 in the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic
Feb 26, 2022 | Men's Tennis
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 48 Tulane University men's tennis team picked up one win in three matches at the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic this weekend. The Green Wave earned a victory over Alabama on Saturday and suffered losses to No. 30 Middle Tennessee Friday and No. 25 Auburn Saturday.
"We had a really tough one against Auburn but showed a lot of fight and focus and maturity compared to the last time we played them a couple weeks ago," head coach Mark Booras said. "It just came down to a couple points this time and things could've turned our way."
To begin the action in Alabama Luka Petrovic picked up a victory for Tulane in singles play against Oskar Bostrom Poulsen 6-3, 6-4. The Green Wave dropped four other singles matches to fall to the Blue Raiders in the first round of the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic.
Tulane opened the second round of the event by taking the doubles point against Alabama. The duos of Fynn Kuenkler and Luc Hoeijmans and Billy Suarez and Rafael de Alba picked up wins of 6-3 and 7-5, respectively, to give the Wave the doubles point to open round two on Friday. After the Wave lost the first two singles matches Hoeijmans, Petrovic and de Alba finished off the match against the Crimson Tide by picking up wins on the singles courts on Saturday.
The Green Wave wrapped up the weekend with a tough matchup against No. 25 Auburn Saturday afternoon. After dropping the doubles point to the Tigers, the Wave continued to battle in singles competition with four courts going to a third set. Unfortunately, Tulane was unable to earn any points in singles play losing the match 4-0 to 25th-ranked Auburn.
"We've been talking about development as the focus with the guys this year day by day week by week match by match and this weekend our team showed a lot more maturity and belief in their abilities and started to embrace their identity as a team," Booras said.
The Green Wave will travel west to compete in the Arizona State Invitational from March 11-13.
