Mar 15, 2022 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought battle against American Athletic Conference foe No. 54 SMU 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center. After dropping falling behind 3-0, the Green Wave fought to claim its two points in singles play but was ultimately unable to overcome the deficit to earn a comeback victory.
"I am extremely proud of the way the girls competed and battled all the way through the match," head coach Maria Brito said. "The season is a long journey and it is very exciting seeing where we are and looking forward to this weekend against Houston and Rice."
With the loss, Tulane drops to 7-4 on the season and 6-2 in home matches. The loss also pushes the Green Wave's losing streak against the Mustangs to six matches.
Doubles play began with SMU taking the first match on court two before the pairing of Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell improved to 10-1 on the year with a win on court one to the doubles score at 1-1. On court three Adelaide Lavery and Jiayun Zhu battled to the very end, but SMU came out on top 7-5 to claim the doubles point.
Moving into singles action, the Wave dropped the first two singles points on courts one and six to fall behind 3-0. Tulane did go away quietly, however, as Russell put the Green Wave on the board with a three-set win over Lana Mavor on court five. Yelamanchili pulled the Wave within one shortly after picking up a two-set victory by winning a tiebreak in the second set over Hadley Doyle. Lavery pushed her opponent to a tough third set before SMU managed to clinch the match with win in the final set. On court three Kristen Borland battled in two tight sets before dropping her match in a tiebreaker to end the day in the second set.
Up next, the Green Wave will hit the road to Houston to face the Cougars on Saturday, March 19, and the No. 71 Rice Owls on Sunday, March 20. The match between Tulane and Houston is set for 1 p.m. CT while the match against the Owls will start at 11 a.m. CT.
