Tulane Golf Wins First Ever American Athletic Conference Title

TEAM RESULTS | INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
PINEHURST, N.C. – The Tulane Women's golf team won its first-ever American Athletic Conference Title at the Pinehurst No. 6 course in North Carolina on Tuesday.
Junior Sandra Vazquez grabbed the first individual medal for a Tulane golfer since 2012 with her third-place finish. The Mallorca, Spain native shot 5-over in the tournament.
In the final round the Green Wave edged out both Houston and UCF to take the title with a total card of 892.
Tulane entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed and ranked 92nd in the country. UCF came into the tournament with the highest-rank at 28th in the country.
The Green Wave struggled in the first round, collectively shooting +20 for a team card of 308 and sat in eighth place at the end of the round.
Freshman Carla Bernat had the best opening round for Tulane shooting 2-over, good for a tie for tenth. Cleo Liu wasn't far behind shooting 3-over and tied for 13th.
Vazquez ended the first round in a tie for 25th after going 5-over in the round. She was followed by Carlota Palacios who shot 10-over to hold the 42nd place heading into the second round.
Miriam Emmert started in the fifth spot for the Wave and was replaced by Matilde Innocenti for the final two rounds.
Tulane rebounded in the second round of the tournament with a 1-over-par 289 in the second round to climb into the top five, with Vasquez's card 5-under-par 67, equaling the American tournament's single-round record at Pinehurst No. 6.
Liu carded a 1-over 73, Palacios registered a 2-over 74 and Bernat put up a 3-over 75 for the Green Wave.
The Wave started the final round ten shots back, having to mount a large comeback on a day where the wind and weather played the role of the biggest competition.
Each member of the team stepped up with Palacios and Innocenti having the best round for the Wave both shooting just 1-over and totaling three birdies apiece. Palacios finished the tournament tied for 19th with a total of 229, while Innocenti finished 46th through her two rounds of competition.
Cleo Liu shot a 74 in the final round of action which earned her a fourth-place finish. The sophomore tied for a team-best of three birdies in the round.
Teammate Bernat was one stroke up at 75 in the round, finishing tied for seventh overall.
After thriving in the second round, Vazquez struggled with the back nine in the final round. Holding her composure, her birdie on the final hole secured her third-place finish.
Tulane will await its location for the NCAA Regional that will begin on May 9th.
