Apr 2, 2022 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University sailing COED and women's teams finished day one of the Garner-Tullis Team Race in the top two of the regatta. The Green Wave COED crew holds the top spot with a 10-0 record after the first round while the women's team follows with an 8-2 record to land in second.
"The Wave had an incredibly strong day today, and we are very pleased with the positive progress we've been making to get here," head coach Charles Higgins. "It wasn't just the fact our record was so strong, but rather the way we got those wins."
The Green Wave COED crew rolled through the competition on the opening day of the Garner-Tullis Team Race finishing undefeated at 10-0 on the day. Led by skippers Thad Lettsome, Cameron Giblin, Asher Zittrer and William Keenan along with crews Ellie Spearman, Alex Makoid, Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez and Grace Siwicki Tulane earned two wins over Jacksonville, Old Dominion, South Florida, Miami and the Tulane women's team.
The Wave women's team finished the first day of the regatta in second place out of the six teams competing with an 8-2 record. With skippers Caroline Benson, Mia Hanes and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan working with crews Abigail Borggaard, Lydia Brown, Essie Clifton, Gillian Perrell and Lucy Spearman the Green Wave also recorded two wins over Jacksonville, Old Dominion, South Florida and Miami.
"It was everything you want to see solid at the starting line, great positioning in the races we lead early, and our execution to pull out some solid victories from losing positions were all at a high point today," Higgins said. "Hopefully tomorrow we can have another solid day and seal up the top two spots for the weekend."
Both teams will return to the waters of Lake Pontchartrain on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
