May 25, 2022 | Women's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Tulane University women's tennis double team of Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell had its 2022 NCAA Doubles Championship tournament run come to a close in the Round of 16 Wednesday evening. Yelamanchili and Russell fell in two sets – 2-6, 2-6 – to the No. 6 doubles team in the nation Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova of Texas A&M.
"An unforgettable season comes to an end and nothing but love for these two," head coach Maria Brito said. "We may have lost a match today but at the end of the day we won. Charlie and Lahari are two hard workers who put their heads down everyday without a complaint and with a fun smile on their face and I can't say it enough on how proud we are of them and what an incredible run they have had this year. They made our Tulane nation extremely proud! This is a great stepping stone for our program and the best is yet to come. Thank you to everyone for following and supporting the wave!"
The Tulane pairing fell behind early in the first set dropping the first two games. Yelamanchili and Russell attempted to battle back pulling within three at 2-5, but the comeback came up short in the opening set as Goldsmith and Makarova took the final game.
Yelamanchili and Russell got off to a better start in the second set jumping out to a 2-1 lead. However, the Texas A&M duo mounted a response to win next five games and win the set. With the loss in the second set, Yelamanchili and Russell were eliminated from the NCAA Doubles Championship in the Round of 16 in two set by a score of 2-6, 2-6.
The Green Wave duo was the first to be selected to the NCAA tournament since Maria and Darya Ivanov in 2005. Yelamanchili and Russell were also the first to reach the Round of 16 in the tournament since 2003 after defeating the No. 24 doubles team in the country Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli from North Carolina State on Tuesday.
