Former Greenie Benoit to Represent Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic
Sep 15, 2022 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Donovan Benoit, a former member of the Tulane baseball pitching staff, will suit up for Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic Qualifier. The games will take place between September 16-21 in Regensburg, Germany.
Â
Benoit qualified for the team on account of his mother's native Scottish status.Â
Â
The Great Britain team is in pool A along with Germany, Czech Republic, Span, France and South Africa. The top two team from Pool A will advance to take on the top two teams from pool B in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Â
Â
Great Britain's ranking may be low, but it has made great strides in the recent past, jumping from No. 32 to No. 23 in the men's worldwide rankings. After losing in the 2017 Qualifier final to Israel, Team GB will hope to get over the hump this time around thanks to a roster filled with affiliated players.
The bespectacled Vance Worley, who pitched in the Major Leagues for eight years, is probably the most famous name. He's joined by the Astros' Andre Scrubb, former Angels and Rangers pitcher Michael Roth and former Marlins pitcher Chris Reed among players with big league experience.
Â
In his career, Benoit saw action in 19 games, starting 13. He totaled a 6-4 record with a 5.30 ERA in 78.1 innings of work.
