Tulane Claims 3-1 Home Opener Victory over Howard on the First Day of the Green Wave Classic

NEW ORLEANS- The Tulane volleyball team (3-1) opened the home campaign with a 3-1 victory over Howard University (2-1) on Friday afternoon at the Green Wave Classic inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The individual games scores were 25-16, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-16.
Tulane produced a strong overall offensive display, with 52 kills, five service aces and a hitting percentage of.283 in the four-game set.
Senior Amarachi Osuji led the attack for Tulane with match highs of 14 kills and 17.5 points. Osuji also had three solo blocks and a block assist. She was one of three for the Green Wave that totaled nine or more kills with Melissa Kolurbasi reaching double figures with 10 kills and Mackenzie Martin picking up nine. Setter Kate Van Houten did a bit of everything with 33 assists, nine digs, seven kills and a hitting percentage of .556.
Tulane's defense did their jobs on the back line with Jillian Dits leading the squad with 10 digs. Van Houten, Martin and libero Sophia Ervanian also contributed to the strong defense with all tabbing nine digs.
Howard was unable to keep up with Tulane's aggressive offense throughout the first set as Kolurbasi, Kayla Kaiser and Osuji allowed the Green Wave to keep a steady lead throughout the 25-16 victory.
Tulane started strong in the second set with a 17-12 lead before a five-point spurted allowed Howard to tie the score at 17 all. The remainder of the set was a back-and-forth before a late run allowed the Bisons to escape with the 25-23 victory.
The third set, much like the second, was a close contest throughout, however, the roles were reversed in the end with Tulane pushed through for the 25-23 victory.
The fourth and final set saw Tulane keep a steady lead through for the 25-16 victory to take the match by a 3-1.
Tulane heads back to the court at 6:30 pm. tonight to take on the Roo's from Kansas City. in the final contest of the opening day of the Green Wave Classic
