Makuvire, Rebollo Earn AAC Athletes of the Week
Oct 17, 2023 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane cross country swept the weekly honors for the American Athletic Conference this week as senior Bradley Makuvire and junior Gemma Rebollo were named the league male and female athletes of the week on Tuesday.
Both Makuvire and Rebollo broke Green Wave records in their latest performance to help them garner the AAC weekly distinction.
Makuvire ran a 23:04.8 in the men's 8K at the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Texas A&M which bested the time posted by Emmanuel Rotich of 23:19.9 for Tulane at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational in 2016. His performance placed him in second as an individual at the meet and also helped the Wave claim the overall team title at the meet.
Rebollo set the Tulane women's 6K record after smashing the previous record, 20:26.77, set by Katrina Gemmell in 2001 by running a 19:58.3 at the Arturo Barrios Invitational. Her performance helped her finish 12th overall at the meet.
This marks the second time this season that each Makuvire and Rebollo have earned AAC Athlete of the Week honors. Makuvire picked up his first honor on September 19 after finishing second at the Southern Showcase. For Rebollo, she earned her first selection on September 5 after she won the UNO XC Opener.
Up next, Tulane will travel to Greenville, North Carolina, to compete in the AAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 28.
