
Tulane Falls to Rice in Four Sets

HOUSTON, TX- The Rice University Owls (16-7)ย took down the Green Wave volleyball team (6-19) on Friday, 3-1.ย
Tulane's offense was led by freshman outside hitter, Avery Burks. Burks finished the match with 11 kills and 12.5 total points. Following closely behind was middle blocker, Sabrina Skyers. Skyers finished the match with 10 kills, 11.5 points, and an impressive .471 hitting percentage.ย
Tulane's defense had five total blocks in the match. Skyers and Burks both also led the blocking front with one solo and assisted block a piece. Libero Lauryn Burrows finished the match with 18 digs for the Green Wave's defensive efforts.ย
At the start of the first set, Rice came out firing, scoring five back-to-back unanswered points. The Green Wave was not yet defeated and was able to tie it back up, 7-7. For the middle portion of the set, the Green Wave and the Owls took turns trading the lead until the score was 16-16. Rice ended up scoring three unanswered points and remained in the lead for the rest of the set forcing Tulane to try to catch up. The Green Wave was unable to, and Rice claimed set one, 25-20.ย
The second set started off back and forth, much like the first. It consisted of five ties until the score was 8-8. Tulane then went on a 9-0 scoring run and took the momentum. A flustered Rice team was unable to catch up and the Green Wave claimed the set 25-12. The Green Wave finished the set with a .361 hitting percentage.ย
The third set started much like the second, as a back-and-forth battle. It consisted of five tie scores until the score was 7-7. Rice was then able to score three unanswered points and the Green Wave trailed. Tulane came back within one at 19-18, but the Owls went on a 6-0 scoring run to claim the third set 25-18.
Tulane began the first set in the lead. After the score was 2-2, the Green Wave scored three unanswered points and led until Rice went on an 8-0 scoring run and took the lead at 13-10. The Owls continued their momentum and led for the remainder of the set. The Green Wave was unable to regain their momentum and lost the set and the match, 25-14.
Tulane will have another chance to take on Rice on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.ย
