Tulane Gets 4-3 Road Win Over Owls
Feb 18, 2023 | Men's Tennis
HOUSTON, TX – The Tulane men's tennis team surrendered the doubles point and the top two singles matches but swept the bottom of the lineup to get a 4-3 victory at Rice on Saturday afternoon in Houston.
Luka Petrovic won 6-4, 7-6 (1) at No. 3 and Alex Bancila added a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4. Hoeijmans provided the clinching effort with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 triumph at No. 5 and Rafael de Alba rounded it out with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 6. The Owls won at Nos. 1 and 2 via 10-point tiebreakers after the Green Wave's victory had been cemented.
Rice took the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches by 6-2 and 6-4 scores, respectively. The No. 1 match, featuring Tulane's Billy Suarez and Luka Petrovic, went unfinished.
Tulane improved to 2-3 overall with the win, while Rice dropped to 3-7.
"This was a solid win for us and showed a ton of character from everyone," said Tulane head coach Mark Booras. "We had a very challenging 17-hour travel day, getting to Houston at 1 a.m. last night and had to practice this morning to get ready for the match.
"We came out flat in doubles but responded well in singles, taking five first sets. We took back the momentum and won four straight points at 3-6 for a good team win."
The Green Wave is back in action next weekend at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic next weekend in Montgomery Alabama.
