Green Wave Emerges with 5-2 Win in Crosstown Rivalry
Feb 6, 2023 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's tennis team was pushed by previously unbeaten New Orleans at a few key spots, but the Green Wave ultimately proved too strong for the visitors, winning 5-2 at the City Park Tennis Center Monday afternoon.
Â
Tulane moved above .500 to 3-2 overall with the triumph, while the Privateers were knocked down to 3-1.
Â
The Green Wave's fabulous doubles tandem of Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell were on fire, yet again, breezing to a 6-0 win at No. 1. UNO's Ana Kouchnareva and Ksenia Reznitskaya then took the No. 3 match (6-4), meaning that No. 2 would decide the opening point. In that contest, Adelaide Lavery and Jiayun Zhu posted a 6-4 win to give the Olive and Blue the first dent on the scoreboard.
Â
Tulane won the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles matches, with Lavery (6-4, 6-1), Zhu (6-4, 6-0) and Russell (6-1, 6-4) getting straight set victories. Kristen Borland fought off a game effort by UNO's Laurie Barendse at No. 3 and won 10-5 in the supertiebreaker.
Â
Didi Bredberg (7-6 (5), 6-4) and Raluca Puscas (0-6, 6-4, 7-5) managed the Privateers' two points with No. 1 and No. 6 singles wins, respectively.
Â
The Green Wave will be back in action Friday when Sam Houston comes to New Orleans for a 2 p.m. match. That contest will also be carried live on ESPN+.
