
No. 22 Bowling Travels To Texas to Compete in the Southland Bowling League Championships

New Orleans – The No. 22 nationally ranked Tulane University bowling team heads to the 2023 Southland Bowling League Championships in Rowlett, Texas at the Rowlett Bowl-A-Rama from March 24-26.
The action starts on Friday with the first round matches 1-4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The second round and the start of elimination play on the opening day begins at 1:30 p.m. with matches 5-8. The second day of the tournament on Saturday is an 8:30 a.m. start with the third round matches 9-10. The fourth round is at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with matches 11-12. Sunday's final day of competition starts round five at 8 a.m. with match 13. The first championship match will occur directly afterward and is match 14. The if necessary winner-take-all championship match happens later that afternoon. The winner-take-all if necessary championship match on Sunday will be a baker best-of-seven match.
The tournament is double elimination best-of-three match format with the tournament victor winning the conference and earning one of eight automatic berths for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The seeding for the SBL Championship is based on the current NCAA RPI Rankings. Each match follows a best-of-three format: Teams will bowl one standard five-person game for total pinfall, then five baker games for total pinfall. If one team wins both the traditional match and baker match, they advance. If the two teams split the standard and baker matches, they will then move on to a best-of-seven series of baker games.
The Green Wave are one of eight teams that are vying for the SBL Championship along with Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Valparaiso, Vanderbilt and Youngstown State.
The ultra-competitive league has seven of the eight teams ranked of the top 25 poll, including five in the top-10. The nationally ranked teams in order are No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 4 Arkansas State, No. 5 Stephen F. Austin, No. 6 Youngstown State, No. 9 Sam Houston State and No. 12 Louisiana Tech,
Tulane starts the tournament as the seventh seed and takes on second-seeded Arkansas State in the team's opening match (match 4) on lanes 19-20. The winner of the best-of-three advances to take on the winner of No. 3 seed Stephen F. Austin and No. 6 seed Louisiana Tech in match 8 on lanes 7-8. The loser of Match 4 takes on the loser of Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech in an elimination match in lanes 11-12 on the opening day.
Following the tournament, the following awards will be given out 1) Championship Trophy, 2) Championship Runner-up Trophy, 3) All-Tournament Team (5 members) and 4) Most Valuable Bowler.
The All-Tournament Team will come from a vote by the head coaches with the top-six gaining a spot (five All-Tournament Team selections and one Most Valuable Bowler). The top-five vote recipients will also be named to the league's All-Conference Team.
This year's Tulane bowling roster features five returners in sophomore Katharina Mente, senior Jenica Baron, junior Morgan Gitlitz, senior Amelia Vasquez and junior Yarelis Alvarez. Joining the program are three newcomers in freshman Cassidy Williams, sophomore Sofiia Druchyna and freshman Mia Stolakis.
Last time out at USBC's Intercollegiate Singles Sectional Qualifying Tournament on Friday, March 10, Mia Stolakis led Tulane's three bowlers that by placing 14th overall in the Dayton Sectional hosted at the Poelking Lanes South in Centerville, Ohio with her 1,167 pins and average of 194.5. Her individual scores in the six bowled games were 191, 210, 197, 208, 192 and 169. Katharina Mente was the team's highest finisher in the Dallas Sectional at USA Bowl in Dallas, Texas as she finished 34th with 1,099 pins and an average of 183.1. Her individual game scores were 161, 176, 212, 148, 217 and 185. Teammate Jenica Baron also bowled in the Dallas Sectional and placed 100th overall. Baron totaled 971 pins in her six games for an average of 161.8. Her individual game scores were 174, 159, 135, 163, 133 and 207.
Last time the entire team competed was at the Stallings Invitational from February 24-27, the program finished 6th among a strong field of 13 teams with 10,441 total pins. The squad put up an overall record of 8-4 over the three days of competition. Vasquez led the team with 1,1065 total pins and her average of 194.7. She placed 14th overall.
This season, Gitlitz leads the team with 7,827 total pins. Vasquez has the highest average on the team at 192.8, while Stolakis has the highest individual performance with her 266 against UMES (10/15). Tulane sports an overall 71-47 record this season through the regular season.
Next, the program will see if it wins the conference or gets an at-large berth as a group to qualify for NCAA Bowling Regionals on April 8.
