
Kristen O’Handley Shatters School Record in Heptathlon Victory at the Virginia Challenge

Charlottesville, Virginia / Monroe, Louisiana – Tulane's Kristen O'Handley shattered the school record in winning the Heptathlon at the Virginia Challenge on Friday at Lannigan Field on the campus of the University of Virginia. The meet was one of two the program participated in on the day as the team also competed in the women's 5,000m at the Warhawk Classic at Brown Stadium in Monroe, Louisiana.
O'Handley's point total of 5,802 allowed her to break her own school mark of 5,652 that she just set at the end of March at the Texas Relays. It was the sixth time this year and the second time during outdoor season that O'Handley has broken a school record. She broke the school mark in the Pentathlon four different times during the indoor campaign.
Additionally, O'Handley won the Virginia Challenge event by 56 points in setting the school mark. Teammates Margot Temines placed sixth with 5,349 points, while Laura Fodor earned 11th place with 4,623.
On the second day of the Heptathlon, O'Handley led the team in all three events. She finished fourth in the long jump with a personal-best 5.89m/19'4", earned fifth in the javelin with a personal-best 35.55m/116'7" and won the 800m with a 2:13.40.
In other action on Friday's individual Heptathlon events, Temines placed seventh in the long jump (5.76m/18'10.75"), sixth in the javelin (34.83m/114'3") and 13th in the 800m (2:32.58).
Fodor took 11th in the Heptathlon long jump with a personal-best 5.51m/18'1", 10th in the Heptathlon javelin (27.78m/91'2") and eighth in the Heptathlon 800m (2:25.89).
Also at the Virginia Challenge, Kara Steele placed fifth overall in the triple jump with a 12.60m/41'4.25".
Alex Sharp was the team's lone track& field student-athlete to compete at the Warhawk Classic on Friday. She made it count in finishing as the runner-up in the 5,000m with a collegiate personal-best time of 18:40.88.
Next, the Green Wave track and field program continues competing with the second day of the Warhawk Classic starting on Saturday morning.
