
Outdoor Track & Field Competes in Two Meets this Week

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane outdoor track and field program has another busy week on the schedule as the program participates in a pair of meets. The first scheduled meet sees the women's multis and a squad member from the jump squad competing at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virginia at Lannigan Field from April 20-22. The Warhawk Classic in Monroe, Louisiana at Groseclose Track at Brown Stadium from April 21-22 is the week's second meet where the rest of the squad will be in action.
On Thursday and Friday at the Virginia Challenge, the team will send Kristen O'Handley, Patricija Ozolina, Laura Fodor and Margot Temines to compete in the Heptathlon. Kara Steele will participate in the triple jump on Saturday at the meet.
On Friday and Saturday, the remaining members of the squad that are competing this week head to the Warhawk Classic. Those expected to be in action include Iker Yturralde, Jamie Polakoff, Zander Dunbar, Francisco Roman III, Adam Aldahir, Jon Lloyd, Devean Deal, Cosette Fleury, Kristina Leggas, Kate Sander, Alexandra Potts, Matthew Remondet, Kaia Todd, Olivia Hicks, Bella Gonzalez, Tolu Ajayi and Alyssa Taylor.
Last time out, the program participated in three different meets last weekend spread across two different states.
At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach California on Thursday, Alexandra Potts led the team's five pole vaulters in placing 12th with her 3.76m/12'4". Kate Sander finished 27th with a 3.61m/11'10. Kristina Leggas earned 29th with a 3.61m/11'10". Megan Fitzgerald totaled a 3.61m/11'10" to rank 33rd. Cosette Fleury had a vault of 3.16m/10'4.25" to earn 47th.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Bradley Makuvire ran a school-record time in the 10,000m to pace the squad. He tallied a 28:50.61 to shatter his previous personal best by 47 seconds. He broke Emmanuel Rotich's previous school record mark set during the 2018 campaign by 19 seconds. Overall, Makuvire finished 20th in the race in an ultra-competitive field.
Also at the Bryan Clay, Allison Nelson ran a 10:56.61 in the women's 3000m steeplechase. Her run is the fifth-best in the school record books and placed her 89th at the race. Arturs Lapins also made his mark in the school's record book at the men's 3000m steeplechase with his run of 9:02.64. It was the fifth-fastest time ever at Tulane. Tucker Poshard put his name in the Tulane record book with his run of 14:39.72 in the men's 5000m. He bettered his previous best by 16 seconds. The effort also ranks him ninth in school history. Aaron Gilliam had a personal record of 3:47.91 in the men's 1,500m. The mark places him fifth all-time at Tulane in the career record book.
At the Strawberry Relays, Devean Deal, in his first meet since joining the program, won the men's shot put with his throw 14.05m/46'1.25". The throw also places him ninth all-time in the Tulane record book. He ranked fifth in the men's discus (42.55m/139'7") at the meet.
Tolu Ajayi won the women's 100m with a 12.57m. She also finished second in the 200m (25.72).
Olivia Hicks earned second in the women's high jump with her 1.61m/5.3'5".
Ashley Horwitz placed second in the women's 800m (2:21.04).
Norah Bice took second in the women's discus (35.69m/117'1"). Bice also finished third in the javelin (34.94m/114'8).
Alex Sharp ranked third in the women's 1500m with a personal-best 4:52.93. Brenda Ellis earned fifth with her 4:55.38.
Alyssa Dismuke was the runner-up in the women's shot put (10.77m/35'4"). Bella Gonzalez earned third with a 9.97m/32'8.5". Emma Simons took sixth with her 9.24m/30'3.75".
Additionally, Dismuke ranked third in the discus (34.45m/113'0"). Ashley Trester took fifth (30.20m/99'1"), while Simons earned ninth (25.44m/83.6")
Matthew Remondet finished fifth in the men's shot put with a 12.00m/39'4.5". Francisco Roman III placed seventh (10.98m/36'0.25").
Jamie Polakoff earned third in the men's 1500m with a personal best of 4:06.67. Charlie McLawhorn took fourth (4:07.64), while Adam Aldahir picked up fifth (4:08.80).
Alexis Esteves finished fourth in the women's 400m (59.01). She also placed sixth in the 200m (26.46).
Francisco Roman III took ninth in the men's 100m (11.70) and the 200m (23.81).
Bethwel Tum placed fourth in the men's 800m (1:59.84). Iker Yturralde finished ninth in the same event (2:03.02).

Next, Tulane participates in the Drake Relays from April 27-29 in Des Moines, Iowa and the East Coast Relays from April 28-29 in Jacksonville, Florida.
